Amazon.com Review

A perfect reproduction of a 1950s design, this retro charcoal grill would please Elvis, as well as grill and smoke meats, poultry, seafood, and vegetables in the down-home manner he appreciated. It's heavy and sturdy, and rolls around a deck, patio, or lawn on semipneumatic rubber wheels. Made of cast aluminum for maximum heat radiation, the grill cooks foods uniformly, whether they're grilled quickly or slow-cooked and smoked under the hinged lid. Four adjustable vents and dampers provide precise temperature control. Aluminum side and bottom trays offer lots of room for holding food, utensils, and condiments. The grill assembles easily with screws and nuts (included) and measures 35 inches long, 16 1/2 inches wide, and 35 inches high. Because the cooking section detaches from the lightweight aluminum carriage, the entire unit can be quickly disassembled for a camping trip. --Fred Brack

Summary: PK grill will outlast me 2008-10-18
Comment: PK charcoal grill

We purchased our grill as a young married couple in the fifties and I still use it frequently. I actually have a pork shoulder on the grill as we speak, for football company. The plastic wheels are gone but everyone raves over the flavor and tenderness of the meat. I am now in my seventies and the body of the grill is as good as ever.

Summary: best all-around for grilling & smoking 2008-09-24
Comment: inherited this from my parents, over 30 years old & body seems indestructible, aluminum so it won't rust. replaced the grill & grate, still works like new. functions great as either a smoker or grill, perfect for those of us who don't need to smoke more than a single Boston butt, pork shoulder or a couple of slabs of ribs at once. great all-around item, especially for its size.

Summary: This is a great product 2008-09-03
Comment: I bought this originally for the design figuring grills are essentially all the same. Boy was I wrong. This is so much more than a barbecue! Essentially this is my new oven. I have not used my kitchen oven since I received the cooker (with winter coming I guess I'll have to). You "bake" food in this cooker like you would in an oven or you can grill or you can smoke. It's very versatile. No more meat or fish that gets charred, everything is evenly cooked with the juices sealed inside. Throw on the potatoes, corn or other veggies and bread and that's dinner. I was able to put this together myself in 15 minutes, very easy and I'm usually not to good at assembly. Clean up is also very easy as it disassembles in a minute for transport or cleaning. This is the grill to buy.

Summary: Portable grill lasted 40 years 2008-05-29
Comment: My father bought our first portable kitchen over 40 years ago. I replaced the grate once and it was being used just last week. I purchased a new one last year and the quality is still supurb. Since then I have convinced five other people to buy a PK and everyone of them loves the product. A little pricy, but worth every penny, the plastic cover is unnecessary since they cannot rust (100% aluminum) but if left uncovered in the rain, water can get through the vents and the charcoal gets wet. With every other brand of kettle grill I have purchased (enamelled steel) they rust out in about 3-4 years. The PK is air tight with the vents shut so you can maintain excellent heat control and even shut down and save the charcoal for the next time. I would recommend buying a good Barbeque cookbook like "The Legends of Texas Barbeque" to get the most out of a smoker like this.

Summary: Best ever way to bake a whole chicken 2008-05-28
Comment: I bought the original in 1963 or 4. It lasted about 40 years. I now have one that I got in 1999 when they came back into production. It is the best way I know to cook a whole chicken to perfection without ever looking in. Keep the skin on for a moist & tender perfect chicken. Just set a whole chicken in a Pyrex or ceramic pie pan on one end of the grill with about 24 charcoal briquets in a pile at the opposite end. When the charcoal is starting to glow, close the lid. Totally open the vents over and under the charcoal and keep the vents closed over and under the chicken. It will be done in two hours. Or, for three hours open the vents over the charcoal only half open, but the bottom vents can be fully open on the charcoal end.

After removing the chicken, close all vents and any remaining charcoal will be available to cook your next meal. Remove the skin, carve the meat, spoon some of the juices over it & season with your favorite seasoning salt, just before serving. Optionally, remove the breast skin for the last 15 minutes of cooking and baste with barbeque sauce every five minutes. Close the lid while cooking. Either way, our guests have gone home and ordered themselves this grill.

If I owned the company, I would offer a deluxe life-time model with a nicely designed & more substantial stand with a larger & nicer ceramic tile or granite slab work table attached. I would paint the stand all black. As is, the grill is much better quality than the stand that comes with it. Portable Kitchen PK 99740 Cast Aluminum Cooker
